The new master study program Music Direction at the Faculty of Music of the University of Arts in Belgrade (P1) acquired accreditation of the National Entity for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education on July 6th, 2020. The call for student applications will be open in September, with the studies starting in October 2020.
Music Direction master program, one of the two to be introduced through DEMUSIS project, aims at shaping music professionals skilled in diverse creative processes and various aspects of production of music. Aims of this study program are coordinated with the requirements of modern creative industries in the domestic and international context, as well as with the strategy of development of the use of digital technologies. The study program Music Direction is correlated with worldwide contemporary art and pedagogical trends and is comparable to similar programs at foreign higher education institutions. The study program and curriculum was developed in 2019/20 at P1, with an active participation of EU partner institutions – the New Bulgarian University (P5) and Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (P6).
The learning outcomes cover development of practical skills (such as using contemporary technologies in music recording, production, editing and distribution), theoretical knowledge (such as understanding of music repertoire and material, musical styles and performance), as well as general competences (such as development of psychological understanding, critical thinking and communication skills). Students are gaining knowledge and expertise for independent artistic activity, working in different cultural institutions and in various media. There is a possibility for continuing doctoral studies at the University of Arts – Polymedia Art and Digital Art.
Based on the results of entrance exam and ranking, up to ten (10) students will be enrolled in the master academic studies of Music Direction. Entry prerequisites include completed bachelor music studies in composition, music performance or music research. Entrance exam is consisted
Master study program Music Direction continues for two years (four semesters) and it is structured in the amount of 120 ECTS credits. The main subject Music Direction is two-semester subject and it is attended for 2 years. Other subjects are Studio Audio Engineering and Electronics, Software for Music Production, Processing and Restoration of Recordings, MIDI System, Listening and Analysis of Recordings, Principles of Orchestration, Fundamentals of Acoustics and Psychoacoustics. Elective courses are: Introduction to Electronic Music, Analog Synthesis, Introduction to Applied Music, Mastering and Final Formats, Media Management and Music Production, Psychology and Communication Skills, Space Acoustics, Music Production in Interactive Environments, Live Electronic Music - Live Performance, Hybrid recording and mixing. In the last semester, students choose a subject in the field of Music Production in which they will work for the final exam: classical ensembles and instruments, jazz music, popular music, electronic music, sound system.
The master study program Music Direction envisages the preparation of a final exam, in which students independently prepare, organize, record and produce a music event with a program that is freely formed accordingly with the course content, proving that they achieved the basic goal of the study program – capability for independent artistic activity.
